How Often to Service Your Water Purifier (RO/UV)?

April 10, 20267 min read

Your Reverse Osmosis (RO) water purifier is arguably the most critical health appliance in your kitchen. It strips away heavy metals, bacteria, and harsh chemicals, giving your family safe drinking water. But unlike a refrigerator that just sits there and cools, an RO system is actively trapping dirt and degrading over time. If you ignore its maintenance, you aren't just drinking bad water—you are destroying the machine from the inside out.

The Danger of Delayed Maintenance

When you delay changing the pre-filters on your water purifier, the heavy sediment and mud bypass the exhausted filters and slam directly into the delicate (and expensive) RO membrane. A membrane that should last two years can be destroyed in 6 months simply because a cheap ₹300 pre-filter wasn't replaced in time.

Furthermore, an overworked RO membrane will reject more water as wastewater, drastically increasing your water bills and environmental footprint.

The Standard Service Schedule

How often you need to service your RO depends entirely on the TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) level of your tap water and your daily consumption. However, this is the industry-standard baseline schedule you should follow:

Every 3 to 4 Months: The Pre-Filter

The pre-filter is the white spun candle usually housed in a transparent bowl outside the main RO unit. Its job is to catch mud, sand, and large rust particles. Because it takes the brunt of the abuse, it gets incredibly dirty very fast. If the white candle turns dark brown or black, change it immediately. Doing this faithfully will double the life of your internal filters.

Every 6 to 8 Months: Carbon and Sediment Filters

Inside the machine, the activated carbon filter removes chlorine, bad odors, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The internal sediment filter catches finer dirt. These filters have a finite absorption capacity. After about 6-8 months, they stop filtering chemicals entirely. You must call a technician to replace these.

Every 12 to 24 Months: The RO Membrane and Post-Carbon

The RO Membrane is the heart of the system. If you've been diligently changing your pre-filters and carbon filters, a high-quality RO membrane will easily last 1.5 to 2 years. You'll know the membrane is failing when the water flow rate drops significantly, or if the water tastes slightly metallic or salty.

The UV lamp (if your purifier has one) also degrades over time. While the light may still visibly shine, its germ-killing UV-C intensity drops after about 12 months of use.

How to Never Miss a Service Date

The reality is that RO servicing is out of sight, out of mind. The machine keeps dispensing water, so we assume everything is fine until the water starts tasting bad.

Instead of waiting for a breakdown, use the Cykle app to track your RO purifier. You can set a recurring 3-month reminder to buy a new pre-filter candle, and a 6-month reminder to book a professional service call. Cykle ensures that your family is always drinking safe, clean water, and saves you from prematurely burning out a ₹3000 RO membrane.
